In 1988 when I was diagnosed with advanced systemic Scleroderma, there was little hope of a full recovery, or even a short remission. There is no cure for this disfiguring and deadly disease. My illness began with a swelling in my hand and feet. Next, I began having joint pain in my shoulders, hips, and knees that got progressively worse. Then I lost the feeling in my head and face. I lost my ability to eat because of the numbness in my head and face. I had difficulty opening my mouth as well as swallowing. My demise and disfigurement continued. I wandered from physician to physician with seemingly no hope of even knowing what was wrong with me. Finally, a bright and dedicated rheumatologist gave me the diagnosis of scleroderma…and the seemingly definitive diagnosis of no cure and a relatively short life span. Yet I continued........ |
