So how did all this come about? OK, let me back up and give you a little history... My name is Shaun Pearce. As well as being a professional video maker, I’ve been around computers and software for over twenty years. I wanted to create a brochure to send to prospective clients. Most other freelancers simply send out a resume with a covering letter - the vast majority of which just get tossed in the trash. I wanted something that would a) get noticed and b) get retained and referred back to if the production company didn’t have any work for me then and there. I roughed out an idea, and approached a local company to produce it. I nearly dropped the phone when they told me how much it was going to cost. Just a half page, black and white design was going to set me back over $95 USD! That was in 1995; the going rate is well over $120 USD today. I didn’t bother to ask how much the full job was going to cost - I knew it would be more than I could afford. I decided to do the job myself, and got some DTP software. I thought it would be pretty easy to figure out; after all, desktop publishing is one of those things that’s so cool you just want to dive right in and start creating. The only trouble was, by plunging in headfirst without any guidance I just couldn’t figure it out and became very frustrated. People have called me stubborn, but I wasn’t going to admit defeat...... |
