It occurs when a state of mind is achieved in which suggestions alter someone’s awareness, memory, or thinking in a way that the hypnotized person responds to the alteration as if it were reality. Webster’s definition of hypnosis is an induced, sleep-like state in which the subject readily accepts the hypnotist’s suggestions. Hypnosis is not a form of sleep, but a form of intensified attention that bypasses the usual critical or evaluative activities of the mind. The person being hypnotized thus becomes much more open to suggestion and guidance without the critical factor being at the forefront. Critical thinking is present during hypnotism, but it is mostly not acted upon. We are often in a hypnotized state while driving a car or watching a movie. Those who were in very deep state of hypnosis sometimes report that they can’t remember anything that happened even when given simple reminders. This actually occurs very rarely and only in the deepest states of hypnosis. In most cases, the patient soon remembers most everything that happened while hypnotized. When one first thinks of Hypnosis, what does your mind’s eye conjure up? If I asked you to allow me hypnotize you, would you ponder the question for a second and answer "O.K."? Some people when randomly asked this question might answer "No" without giving it a second thought. Why may someone react this way? Could this reaction be a fear of mind control or what they have been misled to believe is mind control through superstition, unscrupulous hypnotists and bad media. Hypnosis works only if you allow it to. This statement does raise questions, but is true. Only you have the power to control your thoughts, actions and words. A good hypnotist is merely the skilled instrument through which you can learn this invaluable art and improve the quality of your life. History reveals that hypnosis has always existed. Ancients used hypnosis for pain control and meditation. Hypnosis has been used on and off throughout Europe dating back to the years of 1042 A.D. when it was used by the English monarchy. Currently in the year 2005, hypnosis is fast regaining repute and is used in such diverse industries as psychiatry, dentistry, sports, medicine, and of course, entertainment...... |
