After years of trying to move through an active life in spite of severe knee pain, doctors informed Moshe Feldenkrais that surgery might help him. However doctors admitted that there was only a 50% chance his pain would be eliminated. They also admitted that the surgery might cause him to lose some of his mobility. This was the 1940’s, twenty-some years after he had torn his knee at a right angle playing soccer while at Sorbonne University in France earning his engineering degree. Instead of having the surgery, or continuing to force himself through pain, Dr. Feldenkrais zeroed in what he was doing differently when the pain wasn’t as severe. He applied engineering principles to his own body. Those around him couldn’t help but notice his improved movement and lack of pain. As he helped others, the Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education developed. He began training assistants to accommodate the large number of people coming to him for help. Now there are over 3,000 Feldenkrais Practitioners worldwide. |
